Annual
Report
July
1, 2004 – June 30, 2005
We've been busy. On June
19,
2004 we celebrated our first year as an organization with a float on
the East Fork and held our annual meeting on a sandbar. What
could be
more appropriate? At that time we were happy to have put some
tedium
behind us (bylaws, charter, tax status, etc.) and were looking forward
to building our strength as a voice for the river.
Here are the highlights of the year just past.
Education:
- Partnered with the
Murfreesboro Greenway program to create “Water We Here For,” an
afterschool program at McFadden Community Center that teaches kids
about rivers. This program won a monthly award of $300 and
t-shirts for the participants from WaterWorks!, a state-wide water
education and outreach project.
- Partnered with Rutherford
County Planning Department, League of Women Voters and WaterWorks! to
present a lesson on land use and water pollution to 1200 third graders
at
Kids City.
- Hosted TVA and the
Tennessee Growth Readiness program to “Train the Trainers” on issues of
development and water quality.
- Worked with the Smyrna
stormwater program on the first annual Waterfest on Stewarts Creek.
- Presented “After the
Storm," a video program with follow-up discussion at Patterson Park
Community
Center in Murfreesboro.
- Created an ad hoc
advisory committee with members stretching from Smyrna to Short
Mountain.
- Educated ourselves at
conferences, workshops, and seminars.
Cooperation
and Coordination:
- Became the fifth
watershed to join the Cumberland River Compact process (following the
Harpeth, Red, Mid-Cumberland and Caney Fork). We co-sponsored six
community meetings throughout the watershed, named a representative to
the CRC Board and Basin Council, and regularly attend meetings of the
Water Quality Advisory Committee.
- Coordinated with
Watershed Program of TDEC to host a public meeting and water quality
presentation at our annual meeting.
- Worked with the Harpeth
River Watershed Association and AMEC environmental engineers to develop
our proposal for the Lytle Creek restoration
River
Recreation, Access and Cleanups:
- Hosted fun floats and
work floats throughout the temperate months of the year. We floated
every stretch of the East Fork from Hoovers Mill near Woodbury to the
VA near Walter Hill Dam.
- Took some VIPs down the
river in August and used the opportunity to tell a number of County
Commissioners and other officials about our work.
- Promoted the creation of
a Stones River Blueway that will consist of a network of public access
points on the river. We met with Murfreesboro officials concerning
Browns Mill and followed developments concerning the Guy James
property. We’ve also opened discussions with TDOT about regaining
access at the Lascassas bridge.
- Hauled trash: truckloads
out of the Sinking Creek wetlands on Memorial Blvd.; boatloads out of
the East Fork; bagfuls from Fortress Rosecrans and the Greenway during
the "Stones Throw Away” cleanup sponsored by Murfreesboro Parks and
Recreation.
Funding:
- Grant for education and
outreach from TDEC/Greater Nashville Regional Council.
- Grant to plan for
restoration of Lytle Creek from Tn. Department of Agriculture.
- Clean Streams grant from
TWRA.
- Waterworks! prize for our
afterschool program.
Communication:
- Launched our website and
listserv.
- Kept our friends and
members informed through regular email bulletins.
- Received positive
publicity about our efforts in Nashville and Murfreesboro papers.
- Communicated frequently
with state and local public officials.
- We have a phone:
615-692-2126.
Staff:
Our grant from TDEC/GNRC
has allowed us to hire a part-time assistant. Randle Branch began
working for us as a contractor in May, spending approximately 12 hours
per week to build our educational network, identify and develop
educational materials and assist with educational programming. Randle
joined the group as a volunteer and was the instigator of the “Water We
Here For?” program.
